Top 5 Things Every Church Should Know

Top 5 Things Every Church Should Know

TOP 5 THINGS EVERY CHURCH SHOULD KNOW

1. Understand the Budget – Know your limits! When you build new or renovate facilities, the building is only part of the total cost. The non-building or “soft” costs can add up to 20%-30% of your total costs. Know what your affordability and findability may be. This way you can plan a project that fits within your capabilities and becomes reality rather than lines on paper.

2. Start Your Financing Plan Now – Know your limits! Cash has been and always will be king. Cash flow is the new benchmark for lenders, so begin increasing your surplus or reserves now. Money is a great servant and a terrible master.

3. Choose the Right Partner – Find people who have done what you want to do and choose people that you would be proud to have on your staff team for a few years – that’s how long it takes and that’s what actually happens.

4. Prepare the People – Buildings are not strategies, they’re simply tools. Give your congregation pictures of the new spaces and cast vision of the life-change that will be the result. People give to vision they can trust. Always tie vision back to who you are and who God has called you to reach.

5. Don’t be a Copycat – See what others have done, but remember it’s based on their vision, not yours, and may not be relevant. Look for the transferrable principles that relate to your church and align with your God-given vision.

Reach Church, located in Des Moines, IA is one step closer to beginning a complete campus renovation project. The church recently embarked on a journey to rebrand their identity and facilities to align with their mission, “To REACH the One Who is Disconnected From God.” The church’s re-branding and environmental story telling effort was led by the collective group of strategic thinkers, story curators, visionaries and artisans at North Carolina based StoryLabs. In collaboration with church leadership and StoryLabs, Mantel Teter developed conceptual designs that transform the existing campus into a fresh and relevant tool that will propel the church’s vision and mission into the future. The church also selected Ames, Iowa based general contractor Story Construction to provide alternative building systems evaluation, preliminary cost estimating and project scheduling to ensure the project is delivered on time and under budget. The project is progressing into Design Development Phase for further refinement.

This church has rebranded their identity and created unique strategies for reaching their community. We’re excited to be Reach Church’s architectural partner and looking forward to translating their vision into reality.

Located in the heart of downtown Maryville, Missouri, First United Methodist Church has a long rich history of serving this community. The congregation still worships inside the Sanctuary built in 1897! While space for worship capacity is still available, the church facility lacks several key features for modern relevant churches today. Following the Healthy Church Initiative study, the building committee identified a few key features needed. They were: identifiable entry, accessibility (elevator), gathering space for connection, renovation of children’s ministry spaces.

With this list of needs, First UMC called on Mantel Teter to lead them in the planning and design process. As a downtown church, property is limited and space utilization must be maximized. A phased design solution allowed the church to meet all the key needs, while providing for expansion to allow a future fellowship hall that would also be used to host community events in partnership with the City of Maryville and NW Missouri State University.
